Do Spark Arrestors Affect Performance?

Spark arrestors help to prevent any spark from moving out of the exhaust pipe. 4 years back when I bought my first dirt bike, my riders fellows asked me to check if spark arrestor was installed in my dirt bike. At that time, I had no idea, what spark arrestor was.

Also, I observed many notices about having a spark arrestor, if you plan to ride a dirt bike. I was not sure if my dirt bike has a spark arrestor installed. 

Spark Arrestors may affect initial acceleration but there is no difference in the power curve. Most technicians agree that spark arrestor does not affect the performance of the dirt bike. 

Do Spark Arrestors Affect Performance?

Before going into the details of the topic, let me explain the spark arrestor. 

What is a Spark Arrestor?

A spark arrestor is a screen that s made of metal, it is designed in such a way that it will fit into the pipe of your dirt bike.

The function of the spark arrestor is to prevent any sparks from flying out of the pipe of your dirt bike. These sparks are dangerous and can even light a fire. Majority of the dirt bikes come with pre-installed spark arrestor but few do not.

Now almost all major brands add a pre-installed spark arrestor in their dirt bikes, if you are buying a used dirt bike, you better check with the previous owner.

Even if spark arresters do not affect the performance of the dirt bike,, yet you should add these. These are important and provides safety against the fire sparks flying from the exhaust pipe of the dirt bike. It is strongly recommended that you get spark arrestor installed in your dirt bike.

How to Know if Your Dirt Bike Has a Spark Arrestor?

Now a very common question that riders face when they buy a dirt bike. If you ride a dirt bike within united states than by law, you are required to use a spark arrestor on your dirt bike. You must have seen notices being displayed in the riding areas about the spark arrestor. 

So if you are not sure if your dirt bike has a spark arrestor, do not worry. Let me guide here: 

Check the back of the pipe of your dirt and if there is a spark arrestor then it should be printed there. If you are buying a new dirt bike, it should be there. Do You Really Need  Spark Arrestors?

Spark arrestors help to prevent any damage that may be caused by the flying sparks from the back of pipe of the dirt bike. You must have seen sparks coming out from the exhaust of the 2 stroke dirt bike at night.

This is a common scene where riders have night events. It may seem exciting and riders accelerate to generate more sparks.

Now the United States is the only country in the world that requires you to install a spark arrestor in the dirt bike if you want to ride legally. Many riders ignore this as it may affect the performance but I don’t mind this. You should also follow all federal and local laws of your state.
