How to Put Relay on Motorcycle Headlight?

Adding relay on a motorcycle headlight is an easy process. The headlight is the vital constituent of the motorcycle. If the motorcycle headlight wears out, then it becomes tough for the driver to drive the motorcycle. If the light that is produced from the motorcycle headlight is not so bright, then you can put a relay on motorcycle headlight to improve the brightness.

How to Put Relay on Motorcycle Headlight? You can put a relay on your motorcycle headlights by removing the fuel tank, removing the screws of headlights, connecting the headlights wires with the ignition socket, connecting wires with point 30, 86, and 87 of the relay with the battery.

The electrical system of the motorcycle does not deliver much energy through which the motorcycle headlight produces a bright light. The relay works as a switch in a motorcycle, and its purpose is to close and open the circuits in an electronic or electromechanical way. 

The advantage of installing the relay in motorcycle headlight is that it takes very little power from the switch of the headlight to turn ON the motorcycle headlight. The electromagnet is present in the relay as it is called the heart of the relay. If your motorcycle does not have a relay, then your motorcycle headlight will wear out soon. 

You should put the relay on your motorcycle headlight. The relay is not very costly, and it is also effortless to install it in the headlight of a motorcycle. You will not need the help of any mechanic while installing the relay in motorcycle headlight. Without relay, the high current moves towards the headlight, and this can damage the wiring or components of the headlight.

How to Put Relay on Motorcycle Headlight?

The relays are available for both high beams as well as low beam. The relay can easily control the high voltage. The damage to the headlight of the motorcycle decreases after installing the relay in it. At one time, the relay can switch numerous contacts, and there is no sparking between relay contacts. 

The motorcycle headlight relays are reliable, simple, compact, and robust. 

Tools required:

  • Screwdriver 
  • Relay
  • Wiring harness
  • Tape 
  • Safety gloves
  • Voltage tester

Remove fuel tank

The first step is to take out the fuel tank of your motorcycle. Before installing, it is crucial to remove the motorcycle fuel tank. The connection of wires is not possible in the presence of a fuel tank.  

The design of every motorcycle is different, and, in some motorcycles, there is no need for removing the fuel tank of the motorcycle. To remove the fuel tank, the first step is to remove the seat of the motorcycle. There are two bolts under the seat of a motorcycle. Therefore, remove the bolts with the help of a screwdriver.

The bolts are tightly fixed under the motorcycle seat; therefore, it will take about 10 to 15 minutes to remove these bolts. After removing the bolts, remove the seat of your motorcycle. Remove the bolt of the fuel tank of a motorcycle, and after this, take out the fuel tank of your motorcycle. 

Remove the screws of motorcycle headlight

There are various screws in motorcycle headlights. The second step is to remove the screws of motorcycle headlight. We will not remove the whole headlight from the motorcycle because our work is just to install the relay on the headlight.

The wiring system is already present in the motorcycle headlight. There are two or three screws on the trim line of the motorcycle headlight. Take out these screws from the motorcycle headlight with the help of a screwdriver. 

The screws are also present under and behind the headlight, therefore, remove these screws. You should turn OFF the engine of the motorcycle while removing the motorcycle headlight. Must wear safety gloves while doing this procedure. 

Understand the connection of the relay

The working of every relay is the same. The numbering is present on the relay, and it is the same on every relay. Before installing the relay, you must understand the numbering system of the relay. The micro-relay is used for the motorcycle headlight.

The numbering of the pins of the relay is 30, 85, 86, 87—Point 30 of the relay links with the motorcycle battery. The wire of motorcycle headlight connects to point 87 of the relay. Point 85 and 86 are present opposite to each other. The coil is present between 85 and 86 points of the relay. 

When the current passes through the point 85 and 86 then the coil activates and becomes an electromagnetic coil. It is recommended that you should first understand the system of the relay. In the next steps, the process of putting the relay on motorcycle headlight will start. The wiring harness is already attached to the relay, therefore, connect it to the relay and also cover the wires with tape. 

Connect headlight wires with the ignition socket

If you look at the wires that are coming from the motorcycle headlight, then you will see that the two yellow wires are attached to the motorcycle headlight. In this step, connect the headlight wires with the ignition socket. 

The wire is present in the ignition socket, so, take it out and connect it with the headlight wires. The headlight turns ON due to the headlight wires. After connecting both wires, wrap it with the tape. It is suggested that you should not leave the wires uncovered.

By connecting both wires, the current will move towards the relay of motorcycle headlight. If the relay is not installed in the motorcycle headlight, then the flow of current can be too high. The lifetime of your motorcycle headlight will increase after installing the relay in it. 

Connect the wire with the 86 point

In this step, connect the wire of the headlight switch with the 86 point of the relay. Take the wire and connect with the 86 point of the relay. After joining the wire with the 86 point, you must cover the wire with the tape. The magnetic force is created when the electrical current passes through it.

When the electrical current passes through the 86 point of the relay, it closes the point 30 of the relay. The 86 point of the relay can allow the electric current to pass to the motorcycle headlight. If the current will not pass through the relay, then the light will not produce in the motorcycle headlight. It is proposed that you don’t connect the wrong wire in the relay. 

Connect point 30 of relay directly with the battery

The socket 30 of the relay is the source of power, and the light produces due to this socket. There are two terminals of a battery, such as the positive and negative terminal. Connect the wire with point 30 of relay and then connect it with the positive side of the motorcycle battery.

The wire should be long because short wire may break. If you don’t want to attach the wire with the positive point of your motorcycle battery, then connect it with the power source switch. If you have connected the wire with the power source switch, then the power will transfer to the relay when the ignition turns ON.

Attach point 87

Attach the wire with point 87 of the relay, and connect it with the wire that is directly connected to the headlight. Then, cover the wire with the tape. When the switch of headlight turns ON, the electric current passes through the relay and light produces.

When the headlight switch is OFF, the electric current does not pass through the relay, and light does not produce from the motorcycle headlight. The pin 87 of the relay is also known as a switch pin as it is connected with the switch of headlight directly. 

Connect the thimble in 86 point

The thimble connectors are used in this step. You can buy the thimble connector from the market. Connect the wire in the thimble and cover it with the tape. The thimble connector works as a switch in the relay that helps to make the connection with the headlight.

 After connecting the thimble in point 86 of the relay, connect the wire with the blue wire of motorcycle headlight. After connecting the wires, don’t leave them bare and must cover the bare wires with the tape. If you don’t want to connect the thimble in point 86 of the relay, then you can connect it in point 85 of the relay. Because the point 85 and 86 points of the relay are reversible. 

Connect thimble in point 85 and connect the wires

In this step, we will make the connection of wires with the chassis of the motorcycle. Take the thimble and attach the wire with it and insert it in the point 85 of the relay. Connect the wire of thimble in the chassis of your motorcycle. 

There should be a ground of the motorcycle where the wire is connected. If there is a space inside the handle of your motorcycle, then you can fix the wire in it; otherwise, you can attach the wire anywhere you want. 

If you don’t want to connect the wire of point 85 of the relay in the motorcycle chassis, then you can connect it in the negative point of battery. You have already connected a wire in the positive terminal of the motorcycle battery; therefore, now attach the wire in the negative terminal of the motorcycle battery. Ducati monster motorcycles have good quality headlights.

Turn ON your motorcycle and check the headlight

The process of putting the relay on the headlight is completed. In this step, check the performance of motorcycle headlight. Turn ON the motorcycle and also turn ON the switch of the headlight. You will notice that the bulb of the headlight will turn ON with bright light. 

You will notice the clicking sound from the relay of motorcycle headlight. This clicking sound is not a problem, and it shows the working of the relay. After checking the working of the motorcycle headlight, put the headlight on the motorcycle.

Put the screws on the motorcycle headlight back and fix them with the help of a screwdriver. You can place the relay in any place you want because it is not very large. Your motorcycle battery will not drain after installing the relay in the motorcycle headlight. You should main your motorcycle on a regular basis to prevent leaking forks in your motorcycle.

Check the battery voltage after installing the relay

After putting the relay on your motorcycle headlight, check the battery voltage. If your motorcycle has a voltage display on its handle, then you can see the voltage on it that is displayed in digital form. Turn ON the headlight of your motorcycle, and you will see that the voltage will be 12.7 or 12.9. If you don’t have a voltage display, then you can measure the voltage with the help of a voltage tester. 

 The relay provides the power to the motorcycle headlight from the battery of the motorcycle directly. It has been examined that when the voltage increases, the output of headlight also increases. The more you increase the voltage, the greater will be the light. 

Benefits

The relays are installed to increase the current output of the motorcycle. Relays are very useful if you are installing an aftermarket headlight that requires more power than the stock headlight. It can also be used when you are using n aftermarket bulb for your motorcycle headlight.

Also, the aftermarket pressure horns and led lights also require relays so that they do not lower the storage of battery. Without decreasing the amount of power of the battery, they complete the requirements of these aftermarket accessories, which require more power and stable output.
